桜の名所行福寺は浄土宗の歴史あるお寺です。
JR東海道線の岡崎駅（岡崎市）とJR中央線の高蔵寺（春日井市）間を豊田市を経由して
結んでいる愛知環状鉄道の北野桝塚駅を下車して北に歩いて数分の所にあります。
高台の北端に位置していて、ここから1㎞ほど北に徳川四天王のひとり榊原康政が生まれた
上野城跡が見えます。
その上野城跡から少し東寄り、さらにその向こうには隣松寺がありあます。
三河一向一揆の当時に、家康が上野城を攻めたときにその舞台となった所です。
その隣松寺は行福寺から2㎞ほどの距離にあります。
贅沢なことに、ちょうど南北に見晴らしの良い整備された道路が走っているので、
その歩道を歩くと、都会では味わえないのどかな田園風景が楽しめます。
また、テストコースを持つ三菱自動車岡崎製作所が北野桝塚駅のすぐそばにあります。
桜の名所行福寺の参道
桜の名所行福寺の参道には、花見の名所などでよく見かける提灯飾りや、
甲高い音で拡声器から流れてくるミュージックや屋台がありません。
その反面、花見客同士がひしめき合うこともなく、落着いて花見を楽しむことができます。
お寺には無料の駐車場があります。
さすがにクルマの街だけのことがあります。
Gyōfukuji Temple: A Hidden Cherry Blossom Spot in Toyota City
Nestled quietly in the hills of Toyota City, Gyōfukuji Temple is a historic Jōdo Sect Buddhist temple and a hidden gem for cherry blossom lovers.
Located just a few minutes’ walk north of Kitano-Masuzuka Station on the Aichi Loop Railway, the temple is easily accessible from either JR Okazaki Station (on the Tokaido Line) or JR Kōzōji Station (on the Chuo Line), both via a scenic train ride through the countryside.
A Place Steeped in History
Gyōfukuji sits at the northern edge of a hill, offering a peaceful view toward the Ueno Castle ruins, located about 1 km to the north. Ueno Castle is known as the birthplace of Sakakibara Yasumasa, one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s famed “Four Heavenly Kings.”
Just a bit east of the Ueno Castle ruins lies Rinshōji Temple, an important site tied to the Mikawa Ikkō-ikki Uprising, where Tokugawa Ieyasu once laid siege to Ueno Castle. Rinshōji is located about 2 kilometers from Gyōfukuji.
Fortunately, a well-maintained road runs north to south along the hillside. As you stroll along the pedestrian path, you can enjoy serene views of rice fields and farmlands—something you won’t find in the city.
And just beside Kitano-Masuzuka Station is the Mitsubishi Motors Okazaki Plant, which features a private test course—another reminder that you’re in Japan’s car manufacturing heartland.
A Quiet Cherry Blossom Experience
The approach to Gyōfukuji Temple is lined with cherry trees that bloom beautifully in spring.
Unlike more crowded hanami spots, there are no loudspeakers blaring music, no food stalls, and no lantern decorations here. Instead, visitors can enjoy a quiet, reflective hanami experience, away from the hustle and bustle.
The temple offers a free parking lot, which is a thoughtful touch—especially in this automobile-loving region.
